2021 Summer Internship

South Bend and Elkhart, Indiana | Full-time

Apply

Organization Description
enFocus is a nonprofit organization that brings an “entrepreneurial focus” to communities by matching current students and recent graduates on innovation projects for regional Civic and Industry organizations in Northern Indiana. Founded in South Bend, Indiana in 2012, we serve diverse project sponsors in the government, healthcare, education, social services, manufacturing, and technology sectors. Our team works collaboratively between two offices in South Bend and Elkhart.

Internship Overview
The enFocus summer internship is a full-time, paid opportunity for motivated students and recent graduates. Interns work on at least two projects throughout the summer: one as a lead on an innovation project designed to assist a local organization, and one as a team member on a group research/entrepreneurship project to support an existing enFocus incubation or social impact initiative. Our projects are based on community needs, which means we have a unique offering of opportunities each year. Some examples of past intern projects are:

  • Working with a local startup to develop a business plan
  • Partnering with City officials to make recommendations on a sustainable food system
  • Analyzing processes and data to identify efficiency gains for a manufacturing business
  • Developing a financial plan for a nonprofit hospital
  • Visualizing data to help improve a grant-funded, community ride-sharing initiative
  • Building and implementing a Google Ads campaign for a local employment agency

Even though specific projects might vary, all of our projects help to discover and design innovative solutions for community partners, called sponsors. As a result, all interns will be expected to:

  • Develop relationships with enFocus community-partners and embrace your experience in the South Bend-Elkhart region
  • Communicate regular project updates to enFocus staff and sponsors
  • Conduct discover activities, such as customer/stakeholder interviews, surveying, strategic research, and data collection and analysis
  • Conduct design activities, such as program or policy design, business model development, process mapping, technology requirements definition, strategic planning, grant writing, and data visualization

Depending on their project placement, interns would typically work out of either the enFocus South Bend or enFocus Elkhart office; however, based on public health guidelines, in-person interaction may not be feasible even by the summer months. As a result, enFocus may instead facilitate this program as a remote internship. More information regarding whether enFocus will require physical presence in the South Bend-Elkhart Region will be provided by May 1st.

Regardless of whether the internship is in-person or remote, enFocus supplements job activities with professional development, networking, and social programming for all interns—including a speaker series from regional business/community leaders. As an enFocus intern, you will have the opportunity to learn from an experienced team of enFocus Fellows, develop a wide range of professional skills, and make a tangible impact in Northern Indiana.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Depending on public health guidance, students must be available to work full-time in the South Bend-Elkhart region for 8 weeks with an expected start date of June 1st, 2021

  • Familiarity and/or interest in technology, business, social impact, and community development
